Remote Access
Map of Remote Linux hosts
The remote Linux hosts used by the KDD Lab are as follows:
- KDD Onsite Systems
- KDD Core - Engineering Machine Room
- Fingolfin (Virtual Applications Server)
- Fingolfin4 is intended to be a virtual instance for very low-CPU/no-GPU services such as a postgresql/MySQL or MongoDB server, or JS and Python/Django jobs.
- Volare (File Server)
- A terascale storage server that can be used to store large datasets, instructional videos etc.
- Moana (Wiki Host-Server)
- Moana2 is the KDD's wiki server.
- Kaos 4 Systems - 2221 Engineering Hall
- Kaos 5 Systems - 2221 Engineering Hall
- Kaos 6 Systems - 2221 Engineering Hall
- Bill Hsu's Office - 2164 Engineering Hall
- Fingolfin (Virtual Applications Server)
- KDD Core - Engineering Machine Room
- KDD Offsite Systems
- CS Department Systems. For details on how to access these systems please check CS Department Wiki.
- CS Linux Server (cislinux.cs.ksu.edu)
- CS Windows Server (remote.cs.ksu.edu)
- KSU Campus-Wide Systems
- KSU Unix Server (unix.ksu.edu)
- Beocat (Campus Compute Cluster)
- CS Department Systems. For details on how to access these systems please check CS Department Wiki.
This PenguiNet profile contains all remote hosts. To import it, save it on your local system, install and activate PenguiNet, then go to Tools -> Import Profiles and browse to and select the XML file. You'll need to change the login names and put in your own passwords, and you may need to reorganize the tree using the Session -> Connection Profiles browser/editor.
Procedure to get Non-KState Students access to computing resources
Students should register for a K-State eID. The instructions on how to do that can be found here.
KDD Lab Director should raise a Special Access eID (general use) form that can be found here. This form also requires Department Head's approval.
Once steps 1 and 2 are done, the student should have an eID, a K-State email account and access to the university's Canvas (Learning Management System).
In order to access the ITS's Unix server [unix.ksu.edu], the student should be able to connect to it using Putty/WinSCP/MobaXTerm with his/her eID and password. If the authentication/login is successful but there is a home directory issue (user's home directory not present), the Supervisor may have to raise the Active Directory access form which can be found here.
Apply for a CS account using the eID at the CS Self-Serve here. Detailed instructions can be found here. For Non-KState students, the required access will go through an approval process and may take time. For any CS Support-related query, please refer to CS Support Wiki.
Once a CS account has been approved, the student should have access to the CS Linux and Windows Servers. The instructions for Remote Access can be found here. For students not physically present on campus, the page also lists instructions on how to set up the K-State VPN.
For access to KDD's Onsite Systems i.e. Fingolfin 4 (Virtual Applications Server), Volare (File Server) and Kaos Systems (individual PCs with GPUs), please contact Lab Director or KDD's Software Infrastructure Team Lead (present: @huichenyang). The current Kaos systems assignment can be viewed here.
